Bridge to TerabithiaEpisodes in the fantasy land of Terabithia reflect AnnaSophia's characters problems with school bullies. The story probably works better as a book, but AnnaSophia's performance is among her best.
Jess, an early teenager, is picked on in school for the relative poorness
of his family. When Leslie (AnnaSophia), a smart, talented and pretty girl,
moves to the house next to Jess' and starts in his school, she too gets to
face the bullies. Though at first put off by losing to her in a sprinting
competition, Jess soon warms up to Leslie. As they go play in the forest,
Leslie's powerful imagination pulls him into her fantasy world, where they
are the heroes of Terabithia.
The Terabithia episodes interleave with the real life of Jess. School pests
appear in the fantasy land in form of monsters to be beaten. The imaginary
episodes are the weakest part of the movie. There is only a handful of
them, and they aren't that long, which makes it hard to suspend belief.
Another structural failing is almost complete lack of resolution. All this
must have worked much better in a book form.
AnnaSophia makes a radiant tomboy. She manages to perfectly combine that
with presence of beautiful and stylish early teenager. The script is aimed
for too young audience to allow for great character development however.
Bailee makes a cute little sister May Belle, one that you feel for when she
faces hardship. The role is quite small, although important in the end.
