FirestarterDrew displays her hallmark cuteness in this otherwise poor adaptation of the book about a girl with out-of-control pyrokinetic abilities.
Based on a popular book by Stephen King and starring Drew in the lead role,
this 80s movie is an object of nostalgy for some. If that's the case for
you, don't watch the movie again, or you may realize that in fact the plot
is thin and dull, acting amazingly weak given the big-name actors (except
for Drew), and production values poor even given the age of the film.
Drew's character Charlene, or Charlie, has psychic powers as a result of an
experimental drug test to which her parents volunteered before her birth.
Most notably, she is able to set fire on objects, but not completely able
to control her power. The military and other spooks take an interest in her
abilities. Drew and her father running from and fighting them makes up the
plot.
Filmed soon after Drew's famous performance in E.T., Firestarter has her in a
very different role, but her strength is still in very similar cute
moments. The role is somewhat large and certainly important, but there
isn't that much acting going on. Charlie is mostly scared, asleep, using
her almost-out-of-control powers, or sorry for having hurt someone again.
The potentially interesting scenes were she's setting fire on things are
done so poorly that they were not credible even when the film came out. But
Drew does have a way of being cute in her inimitable way.
