Il ladro di bambini aka The Stolen Children

A low-budget growth story about a friendship between a preteen girl who has been prostituted, and a simple-minded police officer. The movie is too long for the slim plot, and there is no closure to speak of. Valentina's character is a credible and interesting one however.

Rosetta (Valentina) and her brother, two years younger, live with their poor mother who prostitutes Rosetta to a friend of the family, and probably also to other men. This situation is established quickly in the beginning, and the next scene is the police arresting the mother and the customer, and taking the two children into custody. A young officer Antonio is assigned to take the children into a children's home. When it refuses to accept Rosetta, knowing she's been a prostitute, Antonio heads for another place, without consulting his superiors.
At first the children are sullen and closed, and Antonio indifferent. During the journey they get attached to each other, which growth story makes up the main story line. It sounds simple, and it is, making the 1:50 length of the movie a little too much. The most original twist is Rosetta's situation as a 11-year-old who is known, due to a poorly anonymized front page news item, to have been a prostitute. It's an extremely tough situation for anyone, and all the more so for one so young. Her feeling of shame becomes amply clear, but leads nowhere. Overall, the story is a sad one, and offers little relief of any sort.

The budget has likely been very low. The visuals are dull. Audio track is even worse, with background noise occasionally drowning out the dialogue.
The children act quite well, and make credible children. Valentina strikes a good balance between a street-wise, early teenager who has had to grow up too fast, and a frightened, motherless child. Antonio is similarly credible, but uninspiring.
