The Bad News Bears

A surprisingly adult movie about a kids' baseball league. Tatum's acting is better than in Paper Moon, and while her role isn't large, it carries weight.

Kids' baseball league sounds like content for a bad family movie, but this one is more than that. What starts out as a story about an atrocious baseball team with a bum for a coach, evolves into a completely adult treatment of victory at any cost versus doing what's right.
Tatum plays one of the star players of the team, the pitcher Amanda Whurlitzer. A few years older than in Paper Moon, her acting is more natural. By standards of 2010, the content of her role surprises, revealing the change in culture from 70's. Amanda swears crudely, smokes, talks about her breast buds, and gets beer thrown on her face in anger by her coach.

The role isn't tiny, but not very large either. The character is given enough background that it got me curious, and I'd have liked to learn more. More individual development of the characters outside of the baseball field would have made the film of genuine interest to others than baseball fans.
