The Last Summer of La Boyita aka El último verano de la BoyitaA pleasant and serious movie of nine-year-old Jorgelina, and her friend, a boy who turns out to be something else. Credible characters and good acting don't entirely make up for the slow story.
Nine years old Jorgelina's (Guadalupe) big sister Luciana (María) is
entering puberty, and is now only interested in her looks and boys.
Ignored, Jorgelina goes spend the summer with her father at their farm,
where she befriends Mario, a hard-working boy around Luciana's age. The
twist in the story appears as it becomes evident Mario is not exactly a
boy, something of a surprise to everyone involved.
Spotlight is throughout on Guadalupe, whose acting is very natural, which
compliment can be granted to the entire cast. That the movie didn't make a
big impression on me is more fault of the excessively low-key direction and
the somewhat uneventful story. The style might have worked much better if
the production values were high, but they have a feel of a low-budget film,
with muddy colors, ordinary soundtrack, and overall lack of polish.
María's role as Luciana is much smaller, as she's seen only in the
beginning, and a little in the end. The relationship between the siblings
is, again, very credible, and touches sexual themes much more than one
tends to find in American movies involving children.
The greatest strengths of the movie are the credible child characters,
especially Jorgelina, and the depiction of life on an Argentinian farm.
These upsides, however, don't entirely make up for the lack of a
captivating story.
